Race Pace
The specific, tested pace or effort you can actually sustain for your target race distance and conditions, not a generic comfortable pace.
Race pace is the specific speed or power output you can genuinely hold for the full duration of a given race distance, in something close to the conditions you'll actually race in. It's a precise, tested number, not a stand-in for "comfortable" or "moderately hard." A pace that feels sustainable for twenty minutes on a fresh training day isn't automatically your race pace for four hours, and treating it as if it were is one of the more common ways a race goes wrong before the halfway point.
The distinction matters because "comfortable" changes with fatigue, heat, and how far into an effort you already are, while race pace is anchored to a specific distance and a specific athlete's tested capacity. A swimmer's race pace for a sprint-distance swim leg is a different number, and a different feeling, from their race pace for a full-distance swim leg, even though both might feel similarly hard in the moment they're being held.
How race pace is actually determined
Race pace isn't guessed from how a session feels on a given morning. It's usually built from a recent time trial, results from an actual race at a similar distance, or a percentage of a known threshold value, FTP on the bike, threshold pace on the run, scaled down from that maximal one-hour effort to match how long the target race actually takes. A sprint-distance run leg might sit close to threshold effort; a full-distance run leg, held for several hours, sits meaningfully below it, because an effort you could hold for an hour isn't one you can hold for four. Conditions shift the number too: heat, wind, elevation, and accumulated fatigue all change what's sustainable that day, which is why race pace is a target adjusted by conditions, not a number fixed months in advance.
Why training at it matters, even briefly
Holding true race pace in training teaches something a slower aerobic session or a harder interval session can't: what the specific effort actually feels like well before fatigue sets in, and how your form and pacing discipline hold up when you're deliberately practicing restraint rather than maximal effort. A short block of race-pace work inside a longer session, ten minutes of race-pace running at the end of a long run, a race-pace interval set on the bike, does more for race-day pacing instinct than an equivalent amount of easy volume, because it directly rehearses the exact decision you'll face on race day: holding back from what feels possible in the moment in favor of what's actually sustainable for the distance ahead.
That rehearsal matters most on the leg where pacing mistakes are hardest to undo. Riding a triathlon bike leg above tested race pace is the single most common way an otherwise well-trained athlete ends up walking part of the run, because the cost doesn't show up until it's too late to correct. Practicing race pace deliberately, even in small doses, is what turns "I think I know how this should feel" into an instinct you can trust when the field is moving past you and adrenaline is arguing for a faster start.
