Sighting
Briefly lifting your eyes above the water while swimming freestyle to check your direction against a landmark, since there's no lane line to follow in open water.
Sighting is the technique of briefly lifting your eyes above the surface while swimming freestyle, just long enough to spot a fixed landmark like a buoy or a marker on shore, before returning your face to the water and continuing your stroke. It exists because open water has none of the navigation aids a pool provides. A pool swimmer follows a black line on the bottom without thinking about it. An open water swimmer has to actively check their own direction, and sighting is how that gets done without stopping.
How it's drilled
A good sight is fast: eyes up just enough to see over any chop, a quick look at the target, then straight back down. Lifting the whole head high out of the water, or holding it up for more than an instant, drags the hips and legs down and breaks the body position that makes freestyle efficient in the first place. Most coaches teach swimmers to sight on the same stroke cycle as a breath, so the head is already turning and no extra motion gets added on top of normal breathing.
A common training cue is to sight every 6 to 8 strokes, though the right frequency depends on conditions. A straight, uncrowded course with a clearly visible buoy needs less frequent checking. Chop, crowding, a turn coming up, or a course that bends all call for sighting more often. The number itself matters less than the habit of checking regularly enough that drift gets caught early, before it turns into a real detour.
Why poor sighting adds distance
A swimmer who drifts even a few degrees off a straight line covers noticeably more ground than the course actually measures, because that small angle compounds over hundreds of meters. A beginner who only lifts their head once or twice across an entire open water leg, rather than sighting on a regular rhythm, tends to swim a wandering, zigzag path rather than something close to a straight line between buoys. This is one of the most common reasons a beginner triathlete finishes a swim leg convinced their watch, or the course itself, must be wrong: the extra distance is usually real, and it usually comes from infrequent or poorly executed sighting rather than a mismeasured course.
Why it's hard to learn in a pool alone
Sighting is a motion, and the motion itself can be rehearsed in a pool, lifting the eyes forward every several strokes even with nothing specific to look at. What a pool can't fully replicate is the judgment part: reading a landmark through chop, glare, or other swimmers, and deciding how often to check based on how well the last sight went. That judgment only develops with real open water practice, which is why sighting drills belong in both settings rather than only the one that's easier to access.
